5. Significance and UseTop Bottom 5.1 During preconstruction and construction evaluations, use of these test methods establishes specific and overall performance characteristics for the mortar system. 5.2 Preconstruction testing of mortars prebatched by weight provides information for the selection of the individual mortar system best suited for the masonry to be constructed. The recommended tests and their significance are as follows: 5.2.1 Consistency determinations by cone penetration (Annex A1) allow gaging the water additions for all mortars included in the preconstruction test series. Even if the mortar consistency as measured at the construction site is at a different penetration value than those measured during the preconstruction tests, the cone preparation test serves to standardize water additions for mortars being considered as alternatives before construction. Additional testing of mortar water content-consistency relationships (Annex A4) will allow relating these two factors to batch-to-batch variations at the construction site. 5.2.2 Consistency retention by cone penetration (Annex A2) using disturbed or undisturbed mortar samples provides a means of establishing the early-age setting and stiffening characteristics of the mortars. Because laboratory testing is conducted under static climatic conditions, consistency retention test results reflect the relative performance of the mortar systems under test. The same general relationships are expected to hold during testing at the construction project, except as they are influenced by jobsite weather conditions. 5.2.3 Mortar water-content determinations (Annex A4) allow measurement of the water content of the mortar mixture. Mortars prebatched using moist masonry sand may be mathematically analyzed for mortar water content; however, this test, when used for preconstruction evaluation, establishes the effectiveness of the test method and serves as the control or base for tests performed at the construction site. 5.2.4 Mortar aggregate ratio testing (Annex A4) provides a method for determining the ratio of aggregate-to-cementitious materials. The sieving operation employed during this test is incapable of separating an individual cementitious material when more than one such material is used, but can accurately establish the aggregate-to-cementitious materials ratio of the mixture. 5.2.5 Mortar air-content testing (Annex A5) is useful in establishing the value of this component of the mortar. This test method is designed to evaluate the bleed stability of a freshly-mixed grout under static pressure. It can be used in both the laboratory to qualify grout materials and in the field as a quality control test. When used to qualify grout materials, replicate tests may be specified. 4.1 General: 4.1.1 Non metallic reinforced Portland Cement Based Plaster are vertically applied exterior wall claddings that may be subject to variety of conditions over the claddings service life. The series of tests described in this standard evaluates performance under a variety of test conditions and exposures. Any given project may not be subject to all of the test conditions described herein and all of the test methods may not evaluate all exposures for a given project. 4.2 Transverse Load: 4.2.1 This test determines the ultimate wind load resistance of the wall assembly including influence of the framing, sheathing, and means of attachment. 4.3 Vertical Load: 4.3.1 The weight and attachment mechanism of Portland Cement Based Plaster results in a vertical load transfer to the plaster base. This test method determines the ultimate vertical load capacity of the cladding assembly based on taking the specimen to failure. 4.4 Embedment: 4.4.1 Plaster bases serve as a key, reinforcement and attachment mechanism for Portland Cement Based Plaster. The thickness, profile, and material properties of the plaster bases must be such that it is adequately embedded in the Portland Cement Based Plaster. This can be accomplished through use of a self furred non metallic plaster base or other means such as furring strips. This test procedure determines the effectiveness of the furring mechanism to ensure that the minimum embedment is obtained. 4.5 Fastener Pull Through Resistance: 4.5.1 The non metallic lath is secured to the building frame or substrate with fasteners. This descriptive nomenclature provides information on terms commonly applied to concrete aggregates. This standard is intended to assist in understanding the meaning and significance of the terms. Many of the materials described frequently occur in particles that do not display all the characteristics given in the descriptions, and most of the described rocks grade from varieties meeting one description to varieties meeting another with all intermediate stages being found. The accurate identification of rocks and minerals can, in many cases, be made only by a qualified geologist, mineralogist, or petrographer using the apparatus and procedures of these sciences. Reference to these descriptions may, however, serve to indicate or prevent gross errors in identification. Identification of the constituent materials in an aggregate may assist in characterizing its engineering properties, but identification alone cannot provide the sole basis for predicting behavior of aggregates in service. Aggregates of any type or combination of types may perform well or poorly in service depending upon the exposure to which the concrete is subjected, the physical and chemical properties of the matrix in which they are embedded, their physical condition at the time they are used, and other factors. Constituents that may occur only in minor amounts in the aggregate may or may not decisively influence its performance. Information about concrete aggregate performance in concrete has been published by ASTM. 1.1 This descriptive nomenclature provides brief descriptions of some of the more commonly occurring, or more important, natural and artificial materials of which mineral aggregates are composed. Rheological properties determined using this guide include plastic viscosity and yield stress as defined by the Bingham model and apparent viscosity. Rheological properties provide information about the workability of cement paste. As an example, the yield stress and plastic viscosity indicate the behavior of a specific cement paste composition. As another example, the apparent viscosity indicates what energy is required to move the suspension at a given strain rate. This test may be used to measure flowability of a cement paste or the influence of a specific material or combination of materials on flowability. Rheological properties may be sensitive to the procedure being used. This guide describes procedures that are expected to provide reproducible results.1.1 This guide covers description of several methods to measure the rheological properties of fresh hydraulic cement paste. All methods are designed to determine the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the material using commercially available instruments and the Bingham model. Knowledge of these properties gives useful information on performance of cement pastes in concrete. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. 1.1 This specification covers mortars for use in the construction of non-reinforced and reinforced unit masonry structures. Four types of mortar are covered in each of two alternative specifications: (1) proportion specifications and (2) property specifications. Note 18212;When the property specification is used to qualify masonry mortars, the testing agency performing the test methods should be evaluated in accordance with Practice C1093. 1.2 The proportion or property specifications shall govern as specified. 1.3 When neither proportion or property specifications are specified, the proportion specifications shall govern, unless data are presented to and accepted by the specifier to show that mortar meets the requirements of the property specifications. 1.4 The text of this specification references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material.
